In the context of rising industrial policies implemented across the world in the era of strategic competition, the conference will bring together leading experts, policy practitioners, and early to mid-career scholars to discuss the political and institutional conditions explaining the return of national industrial policies in the global North and global South. Papers in the conference include analysis of novel sectors targeted for structural transformation, such as renewable energy, new electric vehicles, semiconductors, artificial intelligence/digital technologies, as well as specific countries and regions where policies aimed at industrial upgrading and productive capacity building are currently being implemented.
The conference consists of four events:
- Two keynote speeches by
- Professor Ha-Joon Chang and Professor Antonio Andreoni, SOAS University of London, UK
- Professor Patarapong Intarakumnerd, National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS), Japan
- A public roundtable discussion on the politics and practice of industrial policy in Asia
- A total of seven academic panels on new themes relevant to the return of industrial policy
- The launch of a new special issue in Third World Quarterly, entitled “Designing and Negotiating Industrial Policy: Prospects and Challenges for State-led Development in the 21st Century” – a leading journal in Development Studies and Political Economy
